Being new parents, we have discovered that we have been overly optimistic about the amount of free time we have considering the demands on us right now.

Gina and I have decided not to take any visitors at the hospital right now. Lucas is in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and he is here to continue his development and build his strength, weight and stamina. We both wish that we could take visitors and get a chance to show off our handsome little man, but we feel it is better for Lucas if we don't take any visitors right now.

Gina has been spending eleven to twelve hours a day at the hospital with Lucas. During this time she needs to be available for him to have skin-to-skin and breastfeeding time. In between these events she needs to be able to pump, rest, eat and communicate with the staff at the hospital (nurses, lactation consultants, occupational therapists, and neonatal pediatricians).

Gina and I are usually at Grandpa Toombs' house by 8:00pm each night and would love a chance to visit with you there. We hope you all understand that this is a critical time for Lucas. The smallest little things can set him back, and even exposure to a common cold at this time can put him at higher risk for asthma later in life.

This has been a very challenging situation for us emotionally and physically and this was not an easy decision for us to make. Our family and friends mean so much to us; we couldn't have come this far without your support. We look forward to all of you meeting Lucas when he gets to come home.

Love,

Kevin, Gina and Lucas
