Finally, a moment to update the blog. It has been a whirlwind of a month for me. I was hospitalized for preterm labor for 8 days, then a week on bed rest, and then off of all meds and most restrictions by 36 weeks. I thought I would go into labor very quickly after going off procardia, but then I made it to 37 weeks! I had my 37 week Dr.'s appointment and was examined to find out that I was 4 cm, 100% effaced, and 0 station. It turned out that I had a small leak of amniotic fluid and would probably go into labor at any point. So, we headed to the hospital to have him break my bag of waters to get labor going. We all figured it wouldn't take long since I was already so far along. My doulas, Anne and Tabitha and sister Kim, all joined Kevin and I at the hospital. Dr. Carlson broke my bag of waters at 12:15. I began to have the same mild contractions I had been having for the past three weeks, but they started to have a pattern every 3-5 minutes apart. I walked the halls several times and for the next couple hours. They weren't strong enough at this point for me to start breathing through them. Our nurse checked me again at 2pm and I was 4 1/2 cm, 100%, and +1 station. She said that Dr. Carlson wanted her to check me again at 4pm. I continued to change positions from the ball, to swaying and walking the halls. Around 3pm, I began to have to stop, sway, and breath through the contractions. They were getting more intense. The nurse wanted to check the baby's heart rate so we came back to the room around 3:20pm. Baby looked really good and the contractions suddenly became much more intense and my legs started to get weak. I moved on to all fours on the bed leaning over the pillows. I knew I was in transition at this point because of how painful the contractions were and I felt I was not getting any breaks. I kept thinking that I had to pass gas but couldn't and at that point I knew that I was going to need to push soon. The nurse quickly paged Dr. Carlson, who came just in time for me to start pushing. I flipped over in a sitting position for Dr. Carlson to check they baby's position. At this point I started to get a little more rest in between the contractions, which I felt was a gift from God. Once the contractions began again, I started pushing. I pushed out his head and his shoulders were a little stuck because his umbilical cord was wrapped around one shoulder. With another really hard push, Austin John Samuel was born at 3:55. I feel extrememly lucky that I only had hard labor for about 30 minutes and pushed for 5 minutes. I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience. I feel blessed to have had made it to 37 weeks, that Austin was completely healthy, and I got the birth that I had hoped for. Austin weighed 7lbs 9oz and was 20 inches long. Much bigger than all of us expected.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to Anne and Tabitha for being my amazing Doulas. I would not have wanted to do it without them. Tabitha always had a calm and reassuring voice and helped me get through each contractions with massage and back pressure. Not only did she act as my doula but was there as my friend. Anne, was my motherly figure. She helped me breath, and kept me focused when I thought I couldn't do it anymore. I really felt that my Mom was there by her side. It was really special for me. Kevin was very calm, relaxed, and new what to do through the whole experience. He really supported my needs and as stubborn as I tried to be, he made sure I followed all the Dr.'s orders since going to the hospital at 34 weeks. Thank you for being more stubborn than I am! I love you with all my heart. A big thanks to Kim who flew out here to help with Lucas and was also able to attend the birth. She was my videographer, which is maybe a role she will not do again. I think it scared her away from having babies for a LONG time :)
Finally, thank you to all that helped out while I was in the hospital, on bed rest, and during labor/delivery. Meghan and Paul, Crystal and Eric....thank you so much for taking Lucas overnight when things were crazy. We are really blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family.
Now for the big move....

Sleeping
It is hard to be away from Lucas and stuck in bed, but I will do whatever I need to to avoid another NICU baby. We are so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family here to support us and help with Lucas. Just taking it day by day for now.
Now for trying to pick out a name....
Stay tuned...
Janet is her now to help me out. Her presence is awesome. She can relate to what Gina is feeling better than I can.
Stay tuned...
So we asked if he minded if we tried some stuff to try to get labor going for Gina. He said he didn't mind and he would let the nurses know. So here is what we tried: rocking in a rocking chair, bouncing on our "birth ball" (exercise ball), leaning on the birth ball in a squat, leaning over the back of a chair, standing and slow dancing. We tried these techniques our for a little over an hour. We got a couple of contractions, but nothing very regular. Gina got pretty drowsy so we both slept from 10:00pm to 2:00am. It was nice to get some rest and we were glad that Gina was able to eat yesterday so her strength would be up.
When Gina stood up this morning to relieve herself the baby's heartbeat dropped off again. We got her laid down right away and it came right back up. It seems like if we try to slow the labor process the baby wants to speed it up. When we want to speed things up the baby wants to slow it down. This little stinker has already got Gina and I on a short leash! We are so excited to meet our baby!
Gina also really liked when the anesthesiologist told Gina she was easy to diagnose because she was "skinny"!
Kim and I went to lunch in the cafeteria today. When we returned to our room Gina was sleeping so soundly she was snoring (John and Janet were in the room with her). It made me very happy that she was able to get some rest. She really needs to avoid any excitement/anxiety right now because our doctor would like to see us in the holding pattern for a while longer.
There are too many variables to be specific about labor and any possibility of being induced. Gina can't get out of the bed and is constantly being monitored. We are trusting in our doctor and nurses. So be patient. We will update when status changes.
I know it is tough, but you will have to deal with the anticipation. You can email me questions and I will try to address them on the blog, but really I can't answer all of them because we just don't know. We are really taking this one phase at a time.
For those of you clenching your fists and chewing your nails... this is what we have been doing:
Gina just got done having a light lunch of chicken noodle soup and some chocolate pudding for dessert. She isn't on the "clear diet" yet so we are trying to keep her energy up. That is Kim in the background. Kim and John (Gina's dad) just got her from Ontario, OR. John and Janet are getting some lunch in the cafeteria at the hospital. Dr. Palacio expects Gina to get into active labor within the next 12 hours. They are not performing any exams on Gina to check her dilation. We expect labor today, but Dr. Palacio is not in a hurry to get labor started. He is pretty sure Gina will get there on her own. Since her cervix is 100% effaced already, they want to let labor take it's course and don't want it starting because of an exam.
We are all trying to nap when we get the chance and are going to try to give Gina some time to relax. She does better when there are fewer of us in the room. She gets overstimulated pretty easy. Even if we mean well. When we ask questions and try to make her more comfortable she just isn't sure and gets a little annoyed.
She is trying to rest, once again she only got a few hours of good sleep last night. She is cat napping right now.
She has not been put on the clear diet yet, but we are told that once she finishes her "Fruit Goodness" Smoothie she will be on clear diet only (jello, juice, water etc.).
I am proud of my wife and we are excited to meet our baby.
If you want to be specific in your prayers, pray for a normal labor and that Gina is able to remove the catheter before her labor starts to pick up.
We are not taking visitors today so please just keep us in your prayers. Also it would be good to keep phone calls to myself to a minimum. Don't call Gina.
We will run all of the updates through the blog.
Stay tuned.........

Look I don't have to be hooked up to the IV today.
Dr. Palacio told Gina that she could be a little more active around the room this morning. Nothing too vigorous, but she can move around the room, sit down and take a shower.
Gina had an omelette, decaf coffee and some skim milk. My wife really craves milk these days, it was the first thing she drank down.
My boss, Gary, is letting me bring some office work into the hospital.
We both miss Deacon a lot. Janet is bringing him to Bend today. I am going to try to take him to the dog park if I get a chance. At the minimum he can ride with me to the office and then I will drop him off with our friend Sarah. Deacon has a doggie friend there so he will have some company.
I am so proud of her. She is one tough cookie, stubborn, but tough.
Gina is happy to take visitors, but we request that the visits are kept to about 15 minutes or so and smaller groups are better. Just send her cell phone a text message to schedule. Either Janet (her mom) or myself will be in the room to field the messages and schedule according to Gina's status.
It is important that she stay relaxed because our nurse today could see the difference in monitoring her contractions when there were a lot of people in the room. She is doing well, but I just want her to be rested so she has maximum strength once baby decides it is time.
For those who are too far away to visit please just keep Gina and Baby Samuel in your prayers.
Thank you all for the support and love you have shown us!
Great news... Gina's contractions have been coming less regularly and they are less intense. Baby Samuel is still doing well and does not hold still for very long. This baby has been active throughout the pregnancy we just want it to stay inside a little longer! We had another ultrasound and the baby is approximately 33 weeks 1 day, and based on the measurements they estimate baby to be 4 pounds - 13 ounces (+/- 12 ounces). We love our nurses and especially love our doctor!
Gina and Janet ordered in a lunch of Ham and Swiss Cheese, french fries and fruit smoothies. Gina is a real trooper and has been in high spirits. Really the hardest thing for her is to follow the order of bedrest!
We will keep updating this blog as regularly as we can. Please don't be bummed if we don't respond to every email, but rest assured we are reading them and will do our best to respond here on the blog.
We love you all. Thanks for your support!
